Five thoughts on hearing the news

1. Which of you were among the 19 voters who could have made a difference and gotten Shelli Weisberg elected?

2. Three out of four ain't bad.

3. Maybe if certain folks had been more supportive, she would have won. She had a lot to overcome -- a Democrat who works for the ACLU in a conservative Republican district -- and could have been successful with just a few nudges from some important people.

4. As usual, we'll publish the list of voters, so by the process of elimination anyone who cares will be able to figure out who was among the 19 voters who could have made a difference.

5. Five gray-haired white guys, one tax specialist, and one woman will be running our city for the next two years. How many of those 19 non-voters do you suppose were women?

  1. My wife and I rarely have everyone we vote for prevail, but there’s always a first. No ultra-liberal ACLU lobbyist and no chance of a tree ordinance. Congrats to all the winners. The future is looking bright.

  2. I always get a chuckle out of knuckleheads who call anyone connected with the ACLU “ultra-liberal”. Since when is the idea of working to CONSERVE civil liberties considered “liberal”? That makes as much sense as calling conservationists, i.e., someone who wants to CONSERVE theenvironment, a “liberal” while referring to someone who wants to exploit it a “conservative”. It just shows how the insipid use of meaningless labels passes itself off as meaningful political debate. Pitiful, when you stop to consider it.

It was neither knuckleheaded or pitiful.  It was a stated opinion.  It was not said, that working to conserve civil liberties is ultra liberal.  In fact, many have the opinion that the goal of Liberalism is to shift civil liberties away from the individual, and place decision-making power with the Government.  The original comment had two components: that the ACLU is ultra-liberal and that candidate Weisberg is ultra-liberal.  I cannot comment on the policies of all individual members of the ACLU.  I can comment on the ACLU organisation and on candidate Weisberg.  Both are ultra-liberal.  Don’t cloud the issue.
