Is there a dog park in Barnum's future?

The second Barnum park design charette produced a series of very rough ideas of what might be included in a Barnum Park. One element common to most schemes? A dog park! Check them out here.

  1. If a dog park must be part of this plan, it should be buried in the center, as far away from residences as possible.  Talk to residents of nearby communities who are suffering from their proximity to noisy animals before subjecting residents of this area to this nuisance.

  2. well as an owner of numerous big dogs, I will say my dogs stay home to complete their bodily functions, and that is the preferred tack to take in my mind, and they nor I have ever frequented a dog park, though in principle I have nothing against them especially in urban areas, cause from a practical standpoint people will just walk their dogs and leave the residue if you deny them fair space for their critters.... I agree with a non dog owners postion.  It makes it all the more ironic it took the courts to make Birmingham come to the same conclusion after dumping their first dog park in the back yard of their Bloomfield Twp neighbors.  So do you feel that was a bit boorish as well as illegal?  Funny how when it affects your ‘neighborhood’, taking action becomes oh so much more justifiable… Don’t you think?

  3. Having numerous dogs, and am a frequent dog walker, as well as a homeowner living near what would once be considered an excellent dog park - I would seriously recommend against a dog park in Birmingham.  In my experience a dog park is an unhealthy place for both humans and dogs. Responsible owners that walk their dogs find that the parks get frequented by more neglectful dog owners and dogs, and hygiene/shots are questionable, and many fights occur between untrained, unsupervised dogs.  Additionally, you cannot avoid the stench on a hot day. Finally, you will require an extensive buffer surrounding the park to ensure the noise (particularly from the frequently fighting dogs) is not shared by others. No dog park should be anywhere near the edge of a neighborhood, or by a walkway where dogs will bark extensively at anyone or any dog walking by or disrupt walkers of dogs that are behaving responsibly.  Also, parents with baby’s do not need to be barked at, and small children scared because of barking dogs.

Once a huge fan of dog parks, I will no longer take my dogs there because of the dog fighting and neglectful owners. While during quiet times, it can be a nice place for a dog to run - a dog truly needs regular walks and a caring owner to be happy - not to be dropped into a gang of unsupervised, untrained dogs.
